Located in the Eastern Anatolia Region, Bitlis has a population of 340,000 according to 2020 data. The Süphan mountain, which is the third highest mountain in Turkey after Great Ararat (5137 m) and Cilo Mountain (Uludoruk-4135 m), rises in the north of Van Lake, around Malazgirt, and its highest peak is Sandıktepe at an altitude of 4058 meters. At the summit of this mountain there is a 1 km diameter recent eruptive lava mound and a caldera with large small glacial lakes on the plain at the top of this mound. The Usta Şagirt Vault, which is very close to Lake Van in the middle of the fields extending to the south of the Meydanlık Cemetery, is the largest of the Ahlat Vaults. It is also called the ‘Great Vault’. As a result, although the exact date of its construction is not known, it is the common opinion of the researchers that it was built in the 13th century. Like other Seljuk cupolas, it has two floors. There is the mummy section at the bottom and the main room at the top.

According to the legend; A master and his apprentice built two cupolas, the master’s building was destroyed and when the apprentice’s build remained intact, it was named the Master-Şagirt Cupola. A castle with a very old history in the city center must be seen; unfortunately, the excavations do not end.

In addition to the Muslim tombs, perhaps more Christian; and Ezidi tombs have also been found. One of the unique beauties of Anatolia. There are thousands of tombs in a very wide area; and there are admirable decorations on their tombstones. Some tombstones are about 4 meters long. Entrance is free, it is a 5-minute drive from the city center of Ahlat. Bitlise and tatvana can be reached in 1 hour.
